IAJE places a high value on recognizing those whose efforts have contributed to advancing jazz and jazz education through it’s annual Hall of Fame, Humanitarian, and Lawrence Berk Leadership Awards among others. In that spirit, we are honored to host the annual National Endowment for Arts Jazz Masters Awards, the highest award presented to master jazz artists by the United States.

With support from Berklee College of Music and the Campaign for Jazz, IAJE will establish a Jazz Educator of the Year Award beginning in 2007. The award will be named after legendary jazz educator John LaPorta, who played a pivotal role in the earliest stages of formalized jazz education and served as a distinguished professor at Berklee College of Music for more than three decades prior to his death in 2004. The award will recognize an outstanding high school educator who represents the highest standards of teaching and whose results in the classroom have brought distinction to their institution and their students. The award will include benefits in excess of $30,000 and will be presented annually at the IAJE International Conference.
